The creepy house monster has murdered Attison, inevitably. Ro is physically prevented from leaving and is forced to paint more. The plan is indicated in close-ups and visual references, which is a nice touch – the series as a whole has been good at wordless plot – in fact, probably half the pages in this final issue have no words at all. Just as well Image started sending good quality PDFs of this series so I can see the detail in this visual narrative.
We get an ending in fire and flame, illustrated beautifully, conveying meaning and emotion through lines and colours. This is the medium at its finest here, and the creative team deserve a lot of credit.
The Me You Love In The Dark is one of those stories that you might use to hook a non-comic reader into our weird little world. It’s dark, serious and unsettling while remaining subtle and nuanced in its approach.
