Human Remains is a new horror type comic from Vault, who have been publishing some good things of late.
The premise here is that nightmare creatures show up and kill you if you show any kind of strong emotions. British men have presumably thrived in this universe.
This feels very zeitgeisty. We’ve got a whole bunch of protests about freedom from people who don’t believe the threat is real or is some kind of conspiracy, which seems very familiar in 2021.
The story flits across a few characters at breakneck speed as it tries to cram as much as possible into the 22 pages. Peter Milligan (of Hellblazer fame) has made this issue speed, presumably with a desire to get on with telling some stories inside the premise. Sally Cantirino’s art is expressive and carries out the key trick of telling stories with facial expressions. The colouring is a bit different too – it looks like a cross between 80s style colour separations and watercolours, and is unlike anything I’ve seen before.
This has all the ingredients to be a bit special. One to watch.
